“Ways To Ground Yourself, Literally”
“Did you know the soles of your feet can actually absorb specific nutrients from the ground in the form of an electrical charge that nourishes the whole body? The ways to ground yourself, literally by “earthing”: The Vitamin you take in through your feet.”
So, what is earthing? We live on Earth, but most of us don’t even touch the earth anymore. Living and working in cities, most of us suffer from being extremely earth-starved and not connecting with nature. We are shielded from the earth by non-conductive materials such as rubber and plastic from our shoes, and wood and asphalt from the floor. We sleep and work in high rises, which aggravates this disconnection even more.
Mother Earth’s natural frequencies (free electrons) charge our bodies and reduce electrical imbalances within the body. When we are disconnected and ungrounded—literally not touching the Earth with our skin and bare feet—the body becomes vulnerable and prone to dysfunction, inflammation, and accelerated aging.
What’s more—we are constantly exposed to electric energy, working around electrical gadgets, holding cell phones to our heads, and using bluetooth headsets. We are in the presence of WiFi, microwaves, radio waves, and electromagnetic waves. A buildup of charged energy, or static electricity, causes slowing or even “freezing” of the body’s electrical systems. A buildup of positive energy charge results in “free radicals” in the body which are actually positively charged ions that cause oxidative stress, also known as aging.
What is oxidative stress? A lack of oxygen results in positively charged energy builds up in our systems and contributes to oxidative stress. In fact, we build up a positive energy charge, just like how we build up static electricity that leads to little shocks when touching metal while standing on a carpet.
Benefits of Earthing:
Decreases inflammation
Reduces stress levels
Improves circulation
Reduces chronic pain
Increases energy
Decreased stress levels and muscle tension
Improved biological rhythms – including the circadian rhythm
Increased body healing
Perhaps it is this subtle element, that will make the difference between feeling good and not so good, of having little or a lot of energy, or sleeping well or not so well. There are various ways to ground yourself, but of course, one I love is a yoga sequence.
Try this sequence of postures to reconnect with the earth and restore electrical balance within your body.
STANDING – make sure the soles of your bare feet are connecting. TAKE 20 deep breaths
UTTANASANA- Standing forward fold. On the inhale reach your arms up, and then exhale fold forward over your legs. Place your hands underneath your shoulders on the ground, legs extended if possible. Make sure your palms are completely on the earth and that your hands are coming in direct contact with the grass. Take 10 breaths.
Soften your knees, tuck your chin into the chest, and slowly roll up to stand.
WIDE SQUAT- Bring your feet wider than your hips and come into a wide squat, with your toes tracking out slightly. You can bring hands in prayer in front of your chest. 10 breaths.
Inhale place your hands down and extend your legs. Tuck your chin into the chest and slowly roll up to stand
TREE POSE- Standing up tall bend your right knee into the chest and open the right knee out to the side, place the sole of the right foot on your left inner thigh. Bring hands in prayer in front of the heart. Then you can extend your arms up, and even grab onto the branches of the tree! Take 5 breaths
Bring your right knee into the chest. Exhale release, and do the left side.
Take 5 breaths on tree pose with the left foot pressing against the right inner thigh.
STAR POSE: Open your feet wide apart and raise your arms so that they are parallel to the floor. Keep reaching in every direction as you feel your whole body expanding into space. Take 10-20 deep breaths
