Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti yoga is a vinyasa-based vigorously physical, and intellectually stimulating practice combined with an equally strong foundation in the ancient spiritual traditions of Yoga.
It is a practice of asana that is more than mere physical exercise to keep one’s body fit or to increase strength and flexibility; it becomes a way to improve one’s relationship to oneself and others, through the dissolution of the sense of separateness , the realization of oneness of being, and the discovery of lasting happiness.
Jivamukti Yoga reintegrates the physical, philosophical and spiritual aspects of Yoga:
The name comes from the Sanskrit jiva (individual living soul) and mukti (the freeing from the eternal cycle of death and rebirth). Therefore, the full name implies liberation while still living on Earth. It adheres to five central tenets: Ahimsa (nonviolence), Bhakti (devotion), Dhyana (meditation), Nāda (music) and Shastra (ancient yogic teachings).
It is one of the nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga, created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984. The other eight being: Ashtanga, Iyengar, Viniyoga, Sivananda, Integral, Bikram, Kripalu, and Kundalini. David and Sharon became teachers because they were passionate about communicating Yoga as more than just a system of exercises, but also as a spiritual practice; a path to enlightenment.
Jivamukti OPEN CLASS: All levels welcome!
Whether you’re a beginner, deciphering the difference between vrksasana (tree) and sirshasana (headstand) or an advanced yogi who can put both feet behind their head, the Jivamukti Open class welcomes you onto your mat. You work at your own pace, following the teacher’s verbal as well as hands-on guidance. Asana (posture) options will be provided for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. The class is called “Open” because it is open and suitable to all levels of practitioner. Even so, beginning level students should know that there will not be much detailed “how to do” descriptions.
An Open class presents classical yoga teachings as relevant to one’s life on and off the mat, drawn from the Focus of the Month essay, supported by chanting, breath awareness, flowing vinyasa sequences, alignment exploration, hands-on assistance, relaxation and meditation. All Open classes include 14 points—asanas, meditation and spiritual teachings—in a sequence creatively designed by the teacher. Exuberant, eclectic music plays an integral role: you might practice to a shifting soundtrack of ragas, global trance, hip-hop, spoken word, George Harrison, Sting, Krishna Das, Donna de Lory, Michael Franti, Bill Laswell, Alice Coltrane and Mozart. - From the Jivamukti Yoga School Website
